❄️ Arena Equipment Breakdown Prevention
A practical guide to keeping an ice arena's refrigeration plant and mechanical equipment running — and to the records that make preventive maintenance actually work. Mechanical failures don't just cost repair money; they close the ice, cancel bookings, and strain the relationships a rink depends on. Almost all of it is preventable with a routine and a paper trail.
1. Build a preventive maintenance program
Start from the equipment manufacturers' own service intervals and the recognized refrigeration safety standard for mechanical refrigeration (ANSI/ASHRAE 15). Put every major component on a written schedule rather than reacting to failures as they happen. The plant components that most need regular attention are:
- Compressors
- Chillers and the brine/refrigerant circuit
- Condensers
- Pumps
- Other refrigeration-plant components (receivers, separators, valves)
- Dehumidifiers
- Hot-water boilers (flood and resurfacer water)
2. Keep a daily plant-room log
The single most valuable habit is a written daily compressor/plant room log. Record readings at least once per shift, and no fewer than three times a day. Capture:
- Temperatures across the system
- Volumes / levels
- Vibration observations on rotating equipment
- Lubrication levels
- Pressures (suction, discharge, oil)
- Start-up and shut-down procedures, pump-down operations, and any testing performed
3. Inspect visually — and photograph what you find
On a regular walk of the plant, look for corrosion on piping, valves, seals, and flanges, and check that insulation is intact and dry. Document findings with dated photographs and keep them with the logs. A photo record is one of the operator's most valuable tools: it shows how a condition developed and proves what was done about it.
4. Leak-test on a schedule
Leak-test all piping, valves, seals, flanges, and related equipment at least four times per year. Any refrigerant leak is reported and investigated immediately — never left to the next scheduled check.
5. Monitor vibration on rotating equipment
Vibration monitoring on compressors, pumps, and other rotating machinery helps you decide when an overhaul is genuinely needed, instead of guessing. Follow the equipment maker's guidance on whether and how to monitor a given unit.
6. Test heat exchangers for hidden corrosion
Have heat exchangers eddy-current tested at least once every three years. This finds tube-wall corrosion before it becomes a failure, while there's still time to plan the repair.
7. Review the hazards periodically (PHA)
Run a periodic process hazard analysis: a structured look at how equipment could malfunction and where human error could contribute, with steps to reduce each risk. Retain past reviews for the life of the plant so you can see how the picture has changed.
8. Train the people who touch the system
Only fully trained, qualified operators should run or service the refrigeration system. Competent operation is itself a form of breakdown prevention.
9. If something fails, protect the record
When a component does fail, repair quickly to get the ice back — but preserve the evidence first, in case the failure is covered by a warranty or insurance claim:
- Keep the failed parts — don't throw anything away.
- Photograph the damaged parts and the surrounding area before removing or replacing anything.
- Retain logs, invoices, and a clear timeline of what happened and when.
- Proceed with the repair to minimize downtime — good records and a fast fix are not in conflict.
