🏒 Ice Resurfacer Circle Check

A "circle check" is the walk-around you do before every resurfacing run. The goal is simple: evaluate the machine, its systems, and the environment it's about to work in — before you drive onto the ice. Two or three minutes here prevents most on-ice breakdowns, spills, and safety incidents.

Safety first. Before working near or under a raised snow tank, put the tank up on its safety stand and remove the key. Never rely on hydraulics alone to hold the tank. Keep the machine out of gear with the parking brake set while you inspect.

The environment

The check starts before you're even on the machine.

Building ventilation is switched on and running.
Snow dump / pit and the path to and from it are clear and safe.
Ice-making water supply is on and sufficient for the run.
Consumables (towels, blades, fluids) are stocked for the day.

Every machine — the walk-around

These checks apply to any resurfacer, fuel or electric. Walk the machine in the same order every time so nothing is missed.

Blade & conditioner

Blade correctly adjusted and secured; blade bar sound.
Conditioner raises and lowers freely; guards in place.
Snow breaker and vertical/horizontal augers move freely and are clear of snow, ice, and obstructions.
Auger flighting undamaged.

Water systems

Ice-making water supply sufficient, with steady, even distribution from the flood pipe.
Wash water flows steadily; basket/bag clean.
Towel clean and free of tears.
Squeegee free of tears/cracks, snug end to end.
Water/poly tanks seated and sealed correctly.

Drive & hydraulics

Hydraulic hoses and fittings sound, no leaks.
Belts and hoses tight, no wear, aging, or leaks.
U-joints, conveyor drive (belt/chain), and pumps in good condition.
Leaf springs intact.

Wheels, brakes & steering

Tires, hubs, and studs in good condition and secure.
Guide wheels sound.
Brakes (lines and pedal) working.
Steering and horn respond.

Operator station

Control levers move correctly and return.
Wash valves / water valves function.
Seat, armrest, and pedals secure.
Gauges / hour meter reading normally.
Ignition/key secured when not in use.

Body & safety

Head/tail lights working.
Board brush firmly attached, undamaged.
Safety guards, steps, and grab points sound.
Body panels and safety labels intact and legible.

Fuel machines — additional checks

Fuel supply assessed before the run; lines, connections, and levels sound with no leaks.
Engine oil, filters, and basic fluid levels sufficient and not due for change.
Spark plugs, air filter, and radiator in good condition.
Exhaust system sound (critical for indoor air quality).
Gauges — voltmeter, temperature, and tachometer — reading normally.
Confirm the hydraulic bypass status is correct before starting.

Electric machines — additional checks

Battery charge / gauge sufficient for the run.
Battery and cables secure, clean, and undamaged.
Hydraulic filter in good condition.
No fluid or connection leaks around the battery compartment.

Daily maintenance

Grease the auger bearings every day.
Drain the water tanks at the end of each day.
Fuel machines: shut off the fuel supply at day's end.
Electric machines: put the machine on charge at day's end.

Optional equipment

If fitted, confirm these are present and functional: fire extinguisher, beacon/warning light, back-up alarm, tire-wash system, and seatbelt(s).
